2016 Extra Brut Rose Champagne
Location: Montagne de Reims
Grape(s): Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
This family Domaine in the Montagne de Reims has been around since 1847, but only in more recent years have people begun to take notice - specifically since brother Vincent and Raphael have been active in production. Their 11 hectares of land are farmed biodynamically, or at least still in the lengthy process of conversion, which means they use absolutely zero chemicals in the vineyards and use only their own preparations (e.g. fertilizers) coming from their own farm animals. Further, they do everything by hand, which requires having a fairly large full-time team. Base wines for their Champagnes are barrel-fermented and malo-lactic fermentation is blocked to maintain fresh acidity. Antonio Galloni has written about Bereche saying “Few growers can match Raphael Bereche’s enthusiasm. That energy comes through in wines that faithfull capture the purest essence of vintage, variety, and site [...]” This bottling is their vintage dated Extra Brut Rose. Disgorged March 2020, they describe it as having “[p]ristine nose of wilted rose, toffee, fresh raspberry. Creamy, smooth on the palate. Smooth, spicy finish, return to raspberry and bramble. A freshness that is not [too] acidic. Elegant.”
