PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1er cru “Le Cailleret” 2017:

  • 100% Chardonnay (certified Organic and Biodynamic)
  • Perfectly situated mid-slope, this parcel of Puligny 1er Cru Le Cailleret is just to the north of and at the same altitude as the prestigious Montrachet. Le Cailleret is another 1er Cru often touted as a possible future Grand Cru (fondly referred to by De Montille as a "Grand Premier Cru"). The name Cailleret is related to "cailloux", or stones.
  • Fermented in 50% demi-muids, 50% barrels (25% max new oak). Aged one year in demi-muids and barrels, then aged another 5 months in stainless steel.
  • Production size: 3,800 bottles
  • An exalted vineyard where terroir always trumps whatever cellar tricks a winemaker might have up his/her sleeve. De Montille's Cailleret is often stylistically reminiscent of Chevalier-Montrachet. Very fine and will reward with four to eight years of cellaring.
  • WE 92-94 points “The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets offers up a nuttier, more reductive bouquet than the Folatières, wafting from the glass with notions of toasted bread, lime zest and crisp green apple. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and tangy, with a tense, tight-knit core, chewy dry extract and good grip on the long finish. It's one of the high points of de Montille's 2017 collection.”

About Montille:

  • The storied Domaine de Montille traces its history in Burgundy back to the 1730s. Hubert de Montille took the helm in 1947 with a drive and passion that eventually earned the family a place in the upper echelon of Burgundy estates.
  • Following in his father's footsteps, Etienne de Montille grew the family holdings to 35 hectares and in 1995, took the bold step of transitioning the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming.
  • One of the rare Burgundy estates that excels in reds and whites in both the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, along with many more sectors of the region with its sister petit negociant project, Maison de Montille (formerly known as DEux Montilles).
  • The winemaking at de Montille has evolved over the years, and the resulting wines are less austere in their youth than in the Hubert era. Today's wines are fresh and elegant with terroir-transparency and a structure that is built to last.
  • The de Montilles are purists, so they tend to avoid winemaking recipes and prefer to adapt from vintage to vintage. This said, they do try to stick to a few general philosophic guidelines. For example, they seek long macerations, anywhere from 12 to 16 days, and they emphasize the importance of punch-downs at the peak of fermentation. Barrel aging is paramount, but they believe the oak should not mask the wine, so they keep the percentage of new oak to 25 percent maximum. The de Montilles believe that less is more, and the wines show finesse and greater purity of fruit. Overtime, the wines provide an abundance of layered aromas and flavors which make these Burgundies as pure as they are legendary.
